Unity 4 is finally here after some time in development. We covered the start of the pre-orders some time ago, which came with the initial announcement that the popular engine would be coming to Linux for the first time. The full version keeps this promise, and includes developer previews for Linux.

“The Linux developer preview is already looking amazing and is helping games make their way onto one of the most open gaming platforms in the world.” Explained the blog post. “Rochard was recently released on Linux and demonstrates that Linux development can be very successful.”

The release also comes with support for DX 11 if you’re developing for other platforms as well, and a new animation system called Mecanim that delivers high quality animation tools. There’s a lot more advanced graphical tools as well, like normal mapping when baking lightmaps, skinned mesh instancing, and more.

You can get Unity 4 now from the Unity website.
