SteamOS release date revealed – Friday 13th

SteamOS will be released as Steam Machines leave for the lucky beta testers, however there are some caveats

SteamOS is launching on Friday 13th. At least, that’s what the team from Valve is saying on the Steam Community forums. This will coincide with the 300 beta Steam Machines being shipped out on the same day, allowing everyone to have a look at the OS before the unboxing videos start hitting YouTube.

Steam Machines are coming off the production line as we speak

There are a couple of limitations to the Steam Machines and SteamOS right now. Firstly, the hardware beta participation has been limited to the USA due to regulatory reasons. Valve have not gone into any further details about what the exact reasons are, but they mention it won’t affect the proper release of Steam Machines.

The SteamOS though seems to still be in a beta state – while it will be freely downloadable by individual users and OEMs alike, Valve have mentioned that only “intrepid Linux hackers” should really be using it. What they consider intrepid is yet to be seen.

Check back over the next week as we’ll put together tutorials and impressions regarding the next step in Linux.
