The pinnacle of motorsport is of course Formula 1, where top car manufacturers team up with the world’s greatest drivers to push the limit. Every season new records and stories are created, writing a wealth of data into the history books.

This site is all about illustrating the statistics, facts and figures of who won what race and in what time – blending an array of web technologies in the process. Designed by Paris-based creative director Julien Perrière, the Formula1Data site.

leverages bespoke API’s to capture an extensive resource of information. JavaScript-powered visualisations then graphically convey previous race standings and driver performances, all within a slick, app-like UI. Inspired by circuit-side race monitoring, the stark black theme has real impact regardless of device.

“The core idea that led the whole creative process of Formula1Data was to put the users in the skin of the engineers in the pit, watching their screens with all sorts of data coming from the cars,” describes Perrière. “That is also why we decided to optimise the website for tablets, so it’s now super-easy to get some info on a driver or a race while watching the Grand Prix on TV. The seamless navigation was done with Backbone.js. We retrieve our large amount of data using our own API and we use JavaScript to make pretty visualisations out of it.”
