Every designer’s portfolio site needs to achieve two key things: showcase the work the designer has completed and visually communicate their personality and specific design sensibilities. The portfolio site of Axel Aubert succeeds on both of these levels.
The subtle use of motion graphics throughout the site lifts what could have been yet another scrolling portfolio site. As Axel describes, he wanted to invite the visitor into his world: “I’m a dreamer who loves nature – including the mountains, which is a place of escape and inspiration for me. That’s why there are mountains on the home page and in some projects.”
Axel also sought to inject some interactivity into his portfolio site. He didn’t want the visitor to be a passive observer of his work. “The site is built on a single page,” Axel continued. “When loaded it goes directly to my world to set the tone. Then you have access to the work I have completed this year. I used some jQuery plugins to develop the 3D menu and the bird animation.”
What is striking about the clients Axel works with is that they have understood his strong and bold approach to his work. Illustration and typography are important across all of Axel’s commissions. This, coupled with a thorough understanding of today’s web technologies, Axel is able to realise his client’s brief with engaging work.
