According to research firm Strategy Analytics, shipments of the Samsung Galaxy S III overtook the iPhone 4S during Q3 2012, making it the, “World’s best-selling smartphone for the first time ever.” The research estimates the Galaxy S III to have reached 18 million worlwide shipments during the third quarter of 2012, compared to the iPhone’s 16.2 million shipments.

Strategy Analytics put the overtake down to anticipation of the iPhone 5 which stopped customers from purchasing the 12-month-old iPhone 4S. They also note that that they expect the iPhone 5 to overtake the Samsung Galaxy S III in Q4, noting that the phone has already clocked up an impressive six million worldwide shipments since it went on sale on 21st September.

As it stands, the Galaxy S III currently has a 10.7% market share, one per cent ahead of the iPhone 4S, with the iPhone 5 slowly building on its 3.6% share. Android owners needn’t rejoice too early though, the iPhone 5’s impressive six million sales in three weeks appears to eclipse the 5.4 million sales the Galaxy S III enjoyed during Q2.
