Already a big hit on the Nintendo 3DS, Pokémon Shuffle Mobile is ported onto Android and looks pretty much identical to the original.
However, all is not quite as it seems as the prices of special items – to help you win stages and capture Pokémon – have been sneakily increased, some quite dramatically. While items can be bought using in-game coins earned from completing the various stages, the mobile game is stingier in handing them out.
Coins can also be gained by exchanging rare jewels that are naturally also available in IAP bundles. While the game is playable without the IAP, it requires a fair bit of grinding and you’ll need to wait quite a good while for hearts as one is required for each battle in order to recharge once you have run out.
The match-three battles are still good fun to play. Rather than swap adjacent Pokémon pieces, you can switch any two on the grid you like to make matches, sometimes completing two in the process for a great combo. Special powers can also be activated and there’s some strategy in the selection of which Pokémon to use on each of the stages. There’s also the satisfaction of building up your Pokémon collection and attempting to win rare ones in special challenges.
