The folks at KDE are keen to get into the media centre game with their own Plasma Media Centre, a theme for KDE that’s supposed to fill the gap between PCs and Media PCs by allowing for a TV style interface to be launched from within KDE. The idea is that someone with a laptop on their commute could then launch into the PMC and enjoy watching their media in a slightly more focused interface.

Having said that, currently the interface is still quite simple. However, it’s also still being developed, and the latest version, 1.1 has just been released as a Beta. Some of the new features coming to 1.1 include a new YouTube backend, better file association and refactored common components for media browsers. Some of these have been implemented, with more to come.
PMC 1.1 is currently a little behind schedule – it should have been out by now. However, the full release is currently pegged for 20th August. Grab the latest files from the repo and have a go with it yourself.
