OS X Tutorial: Change the default app for certain file types

OS X is clearly the most advanced operating system on the planet but that doesn’t stop people becoming occasionally frustrated with it. One occasion when this can occur is when opening files. Ordinarily OS X does a great job of anticipating which app you want to open with that file – but when it gets it wrong it can be a real pain. You have to wait for the wrong app to open before quitting and trying again. Luckily, because OS X is the most advanced operating system in the world, you can easily remedy this situation. Here’s a quick look at the contextual menu and how you can permanently change the behaviour of how OS X loads up certain files.

Step 1: Open With…

Ctrl+click on the file in question to access the contextual menu. Slide your mouse onto the Open With option and then go right and down to Other.

Step 2: Pick it

Now select your app from the list of available options in your Applications folder – or from wherever the app you want is currently residing.

Step 3: Tick it

The Always Open With tick box is the one that makes the permanent change and the one that you’ve come all this way for. Make sure it is ticked.

Step 4: Hit it

Now hit the Open button to seal the deal. You will then be able to open this file with the right app every time you load it.
