Next-gen Apple TV specs and dimensions found in iOS 6.1 code

A smaller Apple TV with an A5X chip is on the cards according to the latest iOS 6.1 firmware update. Here's what we know…

Apple TV - FCC Filing
Apple's FCC filing reveals a slightly smaller Apple TV

A new Apple TV is on the horizon and could include an A5X chip as well as a smaller form factor. TUAW points to a new FCC filing showing a slightly refreshed design for Apple’s streaming device while code in the iOS 6.1 firmware update points to its possible internal specs.

Apple’s filing with the FCC shows a new Apple TV model will be 93.87mm on each side compared to the current generation’s 98mm dimensions. It also lists the device number as A1469. The filing was originally submitted in December 2012.

At the same time, AnandTech’s analysis of the code in the iOS 6.1 firmware update shows that the new Apple TV will feature an A5X chip as well as an integrated WLAN and Bluetooth antenna – the same one used in the iPhone 5.

From what we can see, this looks like a pretty incremental update to the current Apple TV, which was released on 7th March 2012 (so expect a release soon), and not the much-rumoured television set we’ve been hearing so much about. That said, we’re still pretty excited by the incoming update.
