Starting off the New Year with a major announcement, Canonical are planning to reveal a brand new ‘Ubuntu product’ tonight at a press event. There’s been no hints at what the product might be, however we can always make a few logical observations and speculations about what will be there.
First of all, we doubt it’s a new spin of the OS – the netbook version was merged back into the main Ubuntu a long time ago, and Canonical seem fairly set on keeping things universal. It may be other software, but our money is on a physical product. Last year around this time, Ubuntu TV and Ubuntu for Android were demoed at CES, and there’s been very few details from Canonical about these since then. The first round of TVs with Ubuntu could well be announced, and the same with smart phones carrying Ubuntu for Android.
Otherwise, with the expansion of the (non-iPad) tablet market over the last year, Canonical may feel it’s the right time to announce their own Ubuntu tablet. Balancing on the edge of reasonability, it may even be an Ubuntu PC, or an Ubuntu powered Steam box to hook up to a TV.
