Last month at LeWeb conference in Paris, Mark Shuttleworth confirmed the existence of an upcoming Ubuntu phone. No information was given regarding who was making the device. This announcement came shortly after the release of Ubuntu Touch 1.0, the mobile OS Canonical revealed just over a year ago, and was the first anything has been mentioned about an actual Ubuntu phone since the Edge campaign.
Apparently, that’s not all we’ll be seeing in 2014. Jono Bacon, community manager for Canonical, mentioned on his weekly YouTube show that multiple devices would apparently “[hit] the market” this year. This is good news for Canonical, and folks that backed the Ubuntu Edge last summer.
CES is still underway, and while Canonical don’t have a presence there this year, some images have leaked of a possible Ubuntu phone on show. Chinese manufacturer Meizu are rumoured to be producing a device, although it’s just speculation for now. If and when a device is officially announced, we’ll make sure to let you know.
