HTC has colloborated with tattoo artists to create a unique prize for winners of the British urban music awards.
A vintage microphone with widespread wings have been emblazoned on the gunmetal grey back of a limited series of the HTC’s flagship phone, the HTC One (M8). The phones will be awarded to MOBO finalists awards, which takes place tomorrow night at the SSE Arena in London.
The design was created by a colloboration between top British tatooists Lal Hardy and Cally-Jo. Hardy has tattooed musicians including Liam Gallagher, Dave Grohl and MOBO-nominees Rudimental in his 40-years in the industry, and is owner of the world renowned New Wave Tattoo shop. Cally-Jo is an up-and-coming talent who is in such high demand mega-star Rhianna once flew the fine arts graduate to the Caribbean to ink the henna-style tattoo on her hand.
“Musicians have long used their skin as a canvas for self-expression, so musicians and tattoo artists have always had a really close affinity with one another,” said Cally-Jo. “The beauty of advances in modern tattooing means that this personal expression is no longer limited to the skin and can be extended to a smartphone, something that today is a second skin, a true extension of yourself and the connector between you, your friends and family. A person’s smartphone is a portal to their life so the ability to personalise it with something they are passionate about is a really wonderful prospect.”
Commenting on HTC’s sponsorship of the MOBO Awards for the third running and the decision to give tattooed edition HTC One M8s to finalists, Ben Walsh, Head of Marketing for UK & Ireland, said: “Having won multiple awards for being the Best Phone of 2014, it seemed fitting to be the handset the hottest talent of the music industry get to take home with them.”
To showcase the Limited Edition MOBO handsets HTC has created a tattoo-inspired green room area for winners, nominees and special guests where on the night, they can relax amongst original artworks by Hardy and Cally-Jo and put the new tattooed phone and features including BoomSound and Duo Camera to the test.
