Learn how to create new events from iPhoto's Photo Stream

Photo Stream is a stand-out feature of iCloud, giving users the ability to maintain a wireless cloud backup and also to share photos easily across devices without lifting a finger, or a wire, as the case may be. There are of course some niggles that come with the system; luckily they are really easily remedied if you know how. The scenario we’ve come across quite regularly is that photos in Photo Stream are all synced and displayed perfectly, but they aren’t sorted. They just appear in that one batch. Ordinarily, a sync with a wire would split these out into time periods and the useful events system that we’re used to. If you want to maintain these you’ll need to do a little housekeeping. Here’s how to split your Photo Stream pics into events – it only takes a couple of clicks and will help you maintain that flawlessly organised library. We would advise that you do this as often as possible as it will prevent you having to undertake a mammoth month of sorting in one hit. So, without further ado, here’s how to keep Photo Stream organised.

Step 1: Select them

In iPhoto, click on your Photo Stream section on the left and then click on the photos you want to create an event with. Use Shift to select multiple pictures and the Command key to select alternate pictures.

Step 2: Import

If you click the Sharing or Send To buttons at the bottom of the iPhoto interface you’ll see this message that allows you to import pictures to your permanent library. Click Import and they’ll be added.

Step 3: Still selected

Your imported pictures will still be selected so you can now use the Events menu at the top of the screen and select the top option: Create Event. This will throw up a new dialog box to confirm.

Step 4: Confirm

Tick the Don’t Ask Again box and then click Create. Your pictures will now be lifted from the generic event into a new untitled event, ready for you to name and organise.
