iPhone 6 and 6 Plus announced – 19 September release date

Apple announces the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with an all-new design and 4.7 and 5.5-inch displays – its thinnest iPhones ever. Find out all the details here…

Apple today announced the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus – two different versions of the brand new iPhone. Both are due to be released on 19 September.

4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus

The iPhone 6 will be available with two different sized screens – 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch. Both have Retina HD displays, with the 6 packing a 1334 x 750 resolution, and the Plus coming with a 1920 x 1080 resolution – nearly three times the pixels as the iPhone 5s.

New processor & longer battery life

Inside the two new iPhone 6s you’ll find the all new A8 chip, along with the M8 motion coprocessor. The A8 chip works in tandem with Metal, a graphics technology that enables developers to create console-like gaming experiences on the iPhone 6. The M8 coprocessor works with the 6’s accelerometer and gyroscope to deliver motion data for iOS 8’s Health app

Apple Pay

Introduced at the Apple Event was Apple Pay, which enables you to pay for physical goods with your iPhone with contactless technology, simply by holding the iPhone 6 next to a reader and holding the Touch ID button. All payment is encrypted and kept secure in the ‘Secure Element’, a chip found only in the new iPhones.

Improved Camera

The iPhone 6 also features a new 8-megapixel camera, with improved optics and a new iSight camera. The camera will perform better thanks to Focus Pixels and Phase Detection AF, a technology usually reserved for high-end DSLRs. Panorama functionality remains, and they can capture up to 43 megapixels. The 6 Plus has Optical Image Stabilization, which automatically stabilises your image with gyroscopes and more advanced tech.

iPhone 6 and 6+ have the capability to record slo-motion in 240fps and video in 1080p.

iOS 8

The iPhone 6 will come pre-loaded with the all new operating system, iOS 8, which releases on 17 September, two days before the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. You can find out more about iOS 8 in our roundup here, or on Apple’s iOS 8 site.
