Before working on Mission Control and Dashboard, which I’m hoping to finish up in the next few days, I started on Contacts. This one was relatively straightforward in overall design, as the iOS 7 icon translates nicely over to Mac. The biggest problem I had was with the shape of the icon – I didn’t want it to be a rounded square like other iOS icons (or my Finder icon from the other day), so I instead used a rounded rectangle that was similar to that from the Mail design. I used the hand-drawn torso that I created for Photo Booth last week, and added some tabs to the right in bright colours.
The only other decision I had to make was whether I would translate the shadows over from the iOS 7 icon to the Mac design. In the end I decided that it looked better with them, and despite making the entire thing look a little more ‘3D’, it improves the design as a whole and makes it easier to understand as a book of contacts.
You can grab the previous icon designs in my project below, and get the Contacts icon a little further down. As ever, you should also get hold of Candybar from here to make applying and saving the icons much easier.
