ICS update for Samsung Galaxy S II rolling out; in the UK from 19 March

The Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update for the Samsung Galaxy S2 is about to start rolling out to users around the world. Read on to find out when you'll get it.

The long awaited Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Samsung Galaxy S II has begun rolling out in some parts of the world, and Samsung has confirmed that it will be available to users in the UK from 19 March.

Samsung said: “Samsung UK can confirm that the roll out of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on Galaxy S II will be available from week commencing 19th March, however the availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network’s own software approvals process.”

This means that while users who bought their devices SIM-free should get the update on the 19th, those who bought through one of the UK’s networks may have to wait longer while the network checks the software (and maybe adds its own apps and bloatware as well). How long this takes varies from one network to another – it famously took Orange six months to release an OS update for the HTC Hero, although more typically it is between a week and a month.

Given the popularity of the Galaxy S2 we’d expect all the networks to be looking to give their users a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, if you can’t wait you can download and flash the new version manually from the xda-developers website.
