DeskPets has been around for a while, but they have recently announced that they will be developing exactly what I asked for last week by making a TankBot that is controlled entirely by the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch Accelerometer. I think it looks great in the concept images, although in my view it is missing the gun turret.
Still, DeskPets say that the TankBot will be out in June of this year for less than $20, with a small dongle which plugs into the headphone jack of your iOS device. From there you can tip and tilt your device and watch the Tank drive around.
If that’s too time-consuming, you can also just unplug the contoller, and the TankBot will use the IR sensor in it’s nose to recognise obstacles. Apparently it can traverse mazes and even interact with your hand motions, although there was no mention of what kind of hand motions it would recognise or whether they will be programmable.
And for everyone asking, don’t worry. The TankBot comes with a USB charger so you can easily get it back up and running without worrying about replacing batteries. What’s not to like?
