There was always something a little Space Odyssey about Siri, so it came as no surprise that Apple decided to include a reference to that famous line in everyone’s new favourite personal assistant. But for those of us who still can’t get enough, the good people at ThinkGeek have once again come up with a product that lives up to their name – introducing the very thoughtful, and very geeky, IRIS 9000.
Simply dock your iPhone next to something that looks remarkably like it’s older sibling, Hal, grab the included remote and you’ll be able to activate Siri from across the room. There’s no built-in mic to receive your commands on the remote itself (that’s something we’d have liked to see), but ThinkGeek have squeezed one in to that impressive looking docking station and they reckon it’ll pick up your commands from across the room. Quite how that’d work in a busy office, we’re not sure. But let’s be honest, you’re not really buying for long-distance Siri conversations, are you?
For bonus points, you can use the IRIS 9000 as a loudspeaker for calls and the red glow on the front of the unit flickers with Siri’s voice. If that isn’t a big enough dose of nostalgia for you, you might have to redecorate your office to look like Discovery One.
IRIS 9000 isn’t out until April next year, but you can get an email notification from thinkgeek.com as soon as it is. You can use that time to save up the $59.99 you’ll need to get your hands on one, as well as seeing how many more sci-fi references Siri understands.
