Facebook has released an update to its iPhone and iPad app that sees features from its separate Camera and Messenger apps integrated into one place. The unassumingly named version 5.1 now includes many of the chat features seen in the Facebook messenger app as well as the ability to batch upload photos from your iOS devices’ camera roll and apply Instagram-like filters and effects to them before sharing them on your timeline.
The update, which is available from the iOS App Store for free right now, also introduces the (currently US-only) Facebook gifts feature, allowing users to send physical gifts to their Facebook friends – perfect for those who happen to be particularly forgetful when it comes to friends and family members’ birthdays.
Elsewhere on Facebook’s campus, Instagram itself has also announced a major update to its photo sharing service. The Facebook-owned company has rolled out web-based profiles to all of its users. Using the URL scheme instagram.com/[username], users can now view, comment and like photos online. The web-based features are fairly limited, though, with Instagram still opting to act as a primarily mobile company.
