App Review – Animoto Videos

Animoto
Developer: Animoto
Category: Photography
Price: Free

With Animoto, you are able to produce a slideshow of the photographs contained on your iPhone and send them to your pals. Only the result is a rather swish, professional 30-second affair that looks as if you’ve spent hours creating it. Getting started is easy. You can chose between a 30-second video and one at full-length (but you need to pay for an All-Access Pass for the latter and some say it doesn’t actually work if you pay). So assuming you won’t want to do that, you then have a choice of selecting five to 10 images for your video, the following screen allowing you to reorder the photos to suit your needs using the same touch-and-move method as when reordering Apps. There is a variety of song genres from which to choose, from classical to gospel, hip-hop to pop and each brings up a range of tunes from rather obscure artists. And that’s it – with your pictures and choice of song in place, it’s a simple matter of tapping Create Video, waiting a little while for Animoto to do its thing (which can take ages) and then sit back and enjoy. Tapping Share allows you to email it to friends and family. The result is like a short music video of your work. It’s a real shame you’re unable to produce longer videos, however, and your control over the production is limited to choosing and reordering images and popping on some music. But each video is supposed to be unique because it ensures your images work in tandem with the tune, placing in appropriate effects to the beats. We found some problems with the app freezing and we would like more options to customise our videos with a bit more individual flair. We’d also like to put our own songs on our videos and use more of our pics. But it’s a fun app that, with a bit more work, could become a must-have addition on your iPhone.
